Well, over the years I’ve been keeping a journal of my travels. My first attempt was back when I was 18 and I had a small book about the size of an iPhone and I jotted down where we went. Like three words max. (Went down Birdsville track) next day (Went to Berderie) etc… and by the end I gave up. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but I didn’t care for writing back then, it was hard for me. Thinking about structuring sentences. I would always make a mistake, cross it out, and then make more mistakes and my paper would look like a game of snakes and ladders. My housemate, at the time, gave me some good advice which I still do today. “Write down what you want to say unstructured meaning just get your thoughts on a page in a sentence or bullet point or even a drawing.” Then you fix it up later. Nowadays we can use word processors to help with editing. So if you can type it in, you’re good to go. Atm I am typing on my iPhone using predicted text to assist. I’d rather use a keyboard because my fat fingers can’t get the spelling right. A little frustrating but effective.
Anyway, for the last few travels, I’ve written a journal in which I have save as a file and stored it away on my computer never to be read again. Or maybe read once. In fact I sometimes refer to it to remember what and where.
Although this trip I wanted to try to provide my writings on line as a blog. I was speaking to a work colleague and he mentioned that WordPress provides the means and ways to create, edit and publish the writing, photos and etc. it seem daunting at first but after getting it setup. it’s very easy. You just need data to write a blog. So I created an WordPress account and selected a free blog theme using their set up site. I still have to pay for the web hosting and I elected to have my own domain ie chefprefers.org it’s not much, all up I paid for three years. $150 for domain and hosting.
Creating your theme is tricky I had to change it on the fly a number of times after publishing but I think I have where I want it now. Very basic site for listing your posts.
The People reading can click on and read. No login required. WordPress has an interface app (Jetpack) which takes care of the editing and loading to the server, really easy. I would do the editing on my phone and because I had the app to create the post, add photos directly from my phone. So there’s no extra step. Generally I use notes on my phone to create and edit the writing and copy it to the Jetpack. Everything can be done on my iPhone. Pretty cool!
It also gives you stats of visitors and reads. Anyway, if you wanted try it and have a need. Then you don’t need to know about html coding to do so. Although they give you an option. My static website cheffers.org was put together by learning html and a ftp app to load on to the web server. Quite complicated and probably wouldn’t go down the path again. But it’s quick and stable. No ads. It you are have trouble with it drop me a line and I can assist.
