Eugorian Night Sky

Eugorian Night Sky

Chapter One Pasian Sea

The morning sun burst through the apartment windows, miraged by the Pasian Sea. The opposite wall projects the copper brightness throughout the room, denoting the day’s arrival. Jesse, preparing the morning dinner, looks towards the balcony. She sees Daniel sitting outside on the patio; he appears to be memorised by the Ocean’s movement. The onshore breeze is so strong, causing a flower pedal to dance along the railing. Her partner’s silver-lined hair moves in sync with the wind. She wonders whether he is happy. Their summer holiday in the polar region is nearly over; she hopes to find a better life. What could they do here in this tourist settlement?

The settlement offers apartments. [1]Bubbles overlooking the Pasian Sea. The bubbles expand along the shores of the tourist resort. Inland is the town of Guze, which lies within the isthmus between the two main polar seas, Pasia and Jasper. The connecting mountainous bushland to the south forms the weather to precipitate all year. This formation causes a tropical ecosystem.

Jesse and Daniel spent their evening exploring the coastal inlets. They walked along the rocks, strolled in the red sand and trudged through the swampy mangroves. Then, they experience massive waves hitting the shore, causing an endless roar. The tide was more extensive than usual due to the ocean planet appearing in the sky. Finally, the twilight was a sign for them to turn in for the day and bunker down for their long-awaited sleep.

Jesse organises an assortment of dry meats and goes to the balcony to accompany her husband. She touches his arm and feels the hair stand up over his smooth, albinism skin. His skin was covered in dark moles, giving it a polka-dot appearance. A common trait amongst their race, which gave them the name “The Polkans”. Generally, the displaced moles appear on the body but not the face. Their complexions display smooth ivory skin, red vertical-slitted eyes and snowy hair. Their race is nocturnal, and one of Polkan’s senses exhibits excellent night vision. Jesse smiles as she sits for their morning meal and peers across the Sea towards the sunrise. This is the only part of the day when they can enjoy the sunshine.

Daniel and Jesse sleeping patterns had to change since they are from the Equator mining town of Flawcan. The time zones are different between the Northern town and the equator settlement and at this time of year, the Eugorian north pole slightly tilts towards the sun providing variation of twilight in the northern region. The sun slowly peaks at the horizon point before descending for the day.

It was their last night here. Jesse regrets the long travel back to Flawcan. Their journey consists of ferries across the Sea, boondoggle transport through the mountains and rugged sand trollies over the desert. The 42-hour journey spans several Eugorian days, which most Eugorians would resist, such as lengthy passage.

Jesse’s archaeologist talents and Daniel’s mining skills are rare in these parts. Their efforts to find an employment around Guze came at a cost. Since it was mainly a tourist destination, there were many jobs like marketing, entertaining, cooking or cleaning. If Jesse wants to stay, their line of work would need to change.

Jesse reaches over and gives him a squeeze on the arm. “We need to”, she paused, searching for his attention. “Catch the ferry before nightfall.” She ends her conversation with a smile. Daniel smiles back and gives her a nod of acknowledgement. Then, he turns his attention to the Sea. She keeps observing his profile and notices gloomy expression, a feature he shows when he is down. They both were sorrowful since their holiday was ending, and the dreaded journey back to the equator began the next day. After the sun was high enough, they turned in for the day.

The bed shook, which stirs Jesse. She opens her eyes and peruses the room. With the twilight peeking through the shades, she could see objects moving within the room, and then the trembling stopped. The hanging on the wall was crooked. She realises that it was a Eugorian Quake. She lay for a while, wondering whether it would return, knowing that the quakes are common in this region. Finally, she relaxes and closes her eyes.

She felt the movement again. She opens her eyes to see Daniel shaking her. She notices her troubled husband and asks,” Are we late?” Daniel shakes his head and utters. “No!” he pauses. “I don’t believe it” He pauses again. “You’ve gotta come and see what’s happening.” The room is quiet; the Ocean tends to fill the apartment with a low rumble, but not this evening. Daniel leads her to the balcony, and she immediately notices his concern. She couldn’t believe it. Jesse turns to her partner with searching eyes and then back towards the Ocean. She wonders if it is a low tide because she can’t see the water. All she could see was the bottom of the Sea.
